Common hearing aid problems and solutions for your child.

Common hearing aid problems can most often be simple enough that you can troubleshoot and solve yourself.

Problem: The hearing aid does not whistle when you cap it in your hand

  • Is the hearing aid turned on?
  • Is the volume control in the right position?
  • Is the battery OK?
  • Is the mold plugged?
  • Is the hook blocked?
  • Is the hearing aid on the regular program? (programs designed for telephone use will not allow whistling when the hearing aid is held in hand)
  • Is the hearing aid damaged?

Problem: The hearing aid whistles when the child is wearing it

  • Is the Volume Control (VC) at a higher volume than normal?
  • Is the earmold tubing damaged?
  • Is there any wax in the ear canal?
  • Is the earmold inserted properly?
  • Is the earmold loose because the ear canal has grown?
  • Is the hook damaged?
  • Is the hearing aid damaged?
  • Is the child’s head tilted so that the hearing aid microphone is against something? (i.e. car seat)

Problem: The hearing aid has completely stopped working

  • Is the hearing aid turned on?
  • Is the battery OK?
  • Is the battery inserted correctly?
  • Is the hearing aid working after a new battery is inserted?
  • Is there any corrosion in the battery compartment or on the battery?
  • Is the earmold plugged with wax?
  • Is the earmold tubing plugged with wax or moisture?
  • Is the hook dry?

Problem: The child says the hearing aid is not working properly

  • Is the battery OK?
  • Is the microphone opening accessible?
  • Is the earmold plugged?
  • Is the earmold tubing damaged or blocked?
  • Is there too much wax in the ear canal?
  • Is the volume in the normal position?
  • Is there any moisture in the tubing and hook?

Problem: The hearing aid makes unusual sounds and sounds distorted

  • Is the battery properly inserted?
  • Does the heading aid have a fresh battery?
  • Is there any corrosion in the battery compartment?
  • Is the T-coil on?
  • Is the On-Off switch in the normal position?
  • Does the earmold fit properly?

Problem: The hearing aid got wet

  • Shake the water away quickly
  • Remove the battery
  • Have the hearing aid checked by the audiologist, if not possible:
  • Put the hearing aid in a dry aid kit
  • Leave the hearing aid in a dry place
  • Check if the hearing aid is working
